Supralapsarianism, Infralapsarianism, and Sublapsarianism are differing thoughts among Calvanists regarding the logical order of God's decrees. The logical order is not the same as the chronological order (how the events actually occur in time, but may be better desribed as "how" God thinks the events through in His mind before creation and as He decides what He will do. The question they each attempt to answer is whether (logically) the decree to save comes before or after the decree to permit the fall.
[t2]Supralapsarianism[/t2]
- The decree to save some and condemn others.
- The decree to create both the elect and the reprobate.
- The decree to permit the fall of both classes.
- The decree to provide salvation for only the elect.
[t2]Infralapsarianism[/t2]
- The decree to create human beings.
- The decree to permit the fall.
- The decree to save some and condemn others.
- The decree to provide salvation only to the elect.
[t2]Sublapsarianism[/t2] (unlimited atonement with a limited application)
- The decree to create human beings.
- The decree to permit the fall.
- The decree to provide salvation sufficient to all.
- The decree to choose some to receive this salvation.
Although interesting to consider, nothing may be truely gained by speculating about the order of God's decrees since the Bible does not present any clear evidence for any of the views. | . | All three views found in Erikson's work Erickson, Millard J., Christian Theology (Grand Rapids: Baker Books, 1998), 931. |
