The belief that God chose the church as a group in Christ, and that individuals only become elect when they become a believer in Jesus Christ.

Corporate election was initially presented by Karl Barth.  Barth's theology placed an emphasis on the community of believers, and therefore the church should have been elected as a group, not as individuals.

The most common verse that is cited for support is Ephesians 1:4, which states that God the Father chose us (the church) in Him (Jesus Christ):

"just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him..."
